Metallica Rocks The New Wembley Stadium

Metallica rocked the new Wembley stadium in London for two nights in a row. Saturday, the boys turned on the autopilot and played the Black Album hits for the Live Earth show. Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman were played, same set (different order) as the band did in 1992 for the Freddie Mercury tribute show.

BBC reports some complaints about them cutting the Metallica set from the live broadcast.

“Bad language by stars attracted 123 complaints - but more than three times that amount were unhappy about rock group Metallica’s set being cut short. Metallica were seen playing Sad But True and Nothing Else Matters. But BBC presenter Jonathan Ross interrupted their set to introduce a recording of Weather With You by Crowded House from Live Earth in Sydney in place of the Metallica song Enter Sandman. Some 413 people complained about the decision.”

Sunday night Metallica headlined Wembley, playing the regular Sick Of The Studio set, with surprise being the inclusion of No Leaf Clover instead of Ride The Lightning.

Here is Enter Sandman for those who missed it:

Metallica’s James Hetfield Questioned at Luton Airport

According to The UK Times: James Hetfield, the frontman with US metal rockers Metallica, was apparently questioned by security officials at Luton airport when arriving for the Live Earth gig at Wembley. Friends put it down to his “Taliban-like beard”.

The story first surfaced couple of days ago at the Ross Halfin diary where he writes: …flew home in the middle of the night to Luton, got home at 6.30 am, then immigration decided they didn’t like James’ “Taliban Metallica” beard. So off we went through immigration.

Here is Metallica group photo, incl. James’ Taliban beard from the newest collection of great Ross Halfin pictures:

Ross Halfin On Tour With Metallica

Some interesting quotes from Ross Halfin’s tour diary about Lars Ulrich:

June 29
Don’t get back from the venue until 4am. I am in the land of Morpheus - my phone rings, ‘Oi, are we going out for a beverage?’ I look at my watch, it’s 5am. ‘No Lars, we are not!’ How does he do it…
Wake up to a sunny warm Lisbon. Off to Bilbao later with the Danish prince.

June 28
I’m dying today. Writing this at 6pm and all I want to do is throw up. In fact I’ve been throwing up all day… Went out with Lars last night and destroyed Lisbon - or rather Lars destroyed me. Jesus, I drank (like a moron) red wine, gin, and rum… Ended up in Lars’ room until 8am listening to NWOBHM on his ipod. Saxon, Blitzkriez, Weapon and other “toe-tapping favourites” as Lars calls them.
Fuck, he’s just been to my room and looks refreshed. God I’m sorry, please let me feel better - and he’s reminded me we were playing Crazy Horses by the Osmond’s over and over…
Well I have to admit it was strange seeing Metallica live. Certain things they still do the same and I found myself knowing when they were going to do them. Disposable Heroes, 4 Horseman, and Whiplash (they played it in soundcheck the day before) were great. Am I Evil was rubbish by Diamond Head and rubbish by them - what a tedious song… “Am I evil, yes I am” Maybe it’s the hangover. I will begrudgingly admit I had a good time…

No Leaf Clover jam

Compared to the setlist reported earlier, Orion, Am I Evil?, and Disposable Heroes look set to be played regularly on the tour. Big suprise is the inclusion of the “…And Justice For All” title song in the rehearsal.

Metallica Joins Live Earth Line-Up

Metallica, Kasabian, Pussycat Dolls, and Terra Naomi are the final acts to be added to the Live Earth London line-up performing at Wembley Stadium as part of the 24-hour, 7-continent Live Earth concert series on 7/7/07.

Lars Ulrich of Metallica: “I love my sons. I want them to “inherit the Earth” FOR REAL! We keep waiting for future generations to solve the problems; to invent cleaner technology; to pay the costs…that’s the same as passing the buck. I want the buck to stop here, now. I want lawmakers and laws to impose change. Nothing else will keep this world safe for my sons.”

All money raised will benefit four climate charities hand-selected by the band: Sierra Club, The Apollo Alliance, WWF and Rainforest Action Network.

The concert will be streamed live on 7/7/07 at LiveEarth.MSN.com and broadcasted on more than 120 networks around the world. An exclusive download of Metallica’s Live Earth performance is going to be available for a minimal fee immediately after the event finishes.
